Despite exuberant ‘showgirl’ qualities of the Oriental Poppies, many of them flower only briefly, or collapse too readily on over-laden stems. You can easily miss their glorious flowering moment. Stems of this form are straight, upright and true, rising a good 50cm above the mound of foliage and making no denial of their flowers. Giant single blooms unfold to deepest blood red. In the border try settling them amongst the beetroot coloured foliage of annual Atriplex hortensis Rubra, which happily frames the blooms before obligingly rising up to conceal them after flowering.
